If your console is overheating or shutting down during use, go through these checks before posting.

Overheating can be caused by anything from dust build-up to hardware faults, so details matter.

Basic checks

  • Make sure the console has proper airflow (not enclosed or blocked)
  • Check for dust build-up in vents and fans
  • Listen for the fan - is it spinning normally, loud, or not at all?
  • Try running the console in an open, cool area
  • Note how long it takes before it shuts down

When you make a post, include:

  • Console model (PS5, Series S, etc.)
  • When it overheats (on boot, during games, after a certain time)
  • Whether the fan is spinning and how it sounds
  • Any warning messages shown
  • Whether it’s been cleaned or opened before
  • Any previous repair attempts

Common causes

  • Dust build-up blocking airflow
  • Dried or poorly applied thermal paste
  • Faulty or failing fan
  • Heatsink not seated properly
  • Internal sensors or board-level faults (less common)

Useful tools

  • Compressed air or soft brush for cleaning
  • Thermal paste (for deeper maintenance)
  • Basic tools to open the console

One thing to avoid

Don’t ignore overheating - repeated shutdowns can cause further damage.

Final note

If you’ve already opened it or cleaned it, say what you’ve done.
If not, that’s usually the first place to start.
